Quick Fixes
The following information can help our patients recognize problems that may occur, and understand how to solve them until a visit to our office is possible.
Loose band or bracket: If a loose band or bracket is still attached to the wire, keep the band or bracket clean. Call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. If the band or bracket is no longer attached to the wire, please return it in sealed envelope for repair and call our office as soon as possible.
Loose wire: Try to replace the wire in the bracket or tube using tweezers. Place wax on the wire for comfort. Call our office to arrange a time to come in so we may adjust the wire. ONLY in the event that you are unable to make an appointment to be seen at our office, clip the wire with fingernail clippers behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened.
Poking wire: Attempt to push down with the eraser end of a pencil. If this is not possible, cover with wax and call us for an appointment.
Lost tie-wire or elastic tie: Though this is not truly an emergency, a lost tie wire or elastic tie should be replaced, but can be done during regular office hours.
Soreness: Soreness during orthodontic treatment is to be expected. A warm saltwater rinse can reduce soreness. As analgesic cream such as Orabase and a bite wafer are also helpful.
Accidents involving the teeth: Please contact your local hospital emergency room or your general dentist. For less critical orthodontic emergencies, please contact our office.
Headgear does not fit well: If the headgear is not worn regularly as prescribed, it may not fit properly and should be adjusted. Call our office for an appointment.
